Discover Brockhole

When planning your visit to The Gaddum why not discover some of the fantastic things on offer here at Brockhole and turn your experience into a true taste of the Lake District?

We are incredibly proud to be right at the heart of the Lake District National Park, a new UNESCO World Heritage site. Take a look at some of the different elements you can experience with us below and visit our Brockhole website for full details of how to book additional activities and events.

Thomas Mawson Gardens

Thomas Mawson designed our gardens, working closely with Dan Gibson who designed Brockhole House. Mawson is internationally known as a key influence in the design of gardens during the Arts and Crafts movement. Mawson started his career as a local landscape gardener with many designs in Cumbria, including Rydal Hall and Blackwell.

The garden was built as a series of south and west facing terraces, sloping gently down to the shores of Lake Windermere, moving from formal to informal planting through flowerbeds, meadow and woodland to the lakeshore.

Take part in one of our regular Garden Tours to learn more about Mawson and his work and discover how beautiful our garden looks today.

The Gaddum Gallery

Discover local art exhibitions in The Gaddum Gallery on the first floor. Pop in and take a look at our latest artist’s exhibition and perhaps even choose a piece of artwork for your home.

Paper Boats: Fragile Waters, an exhibition by Caroline Stow (14th August – 13th October)

Working with local fresh water ecologist Dr Melanie Fletcher and cultural campaigner Johanna Korndorfer, Paper Boats: Fragile Waters is a collection of site-specific works that examines the complexity of the habitats created as water moves from the fells down to the lakes and finally to the sea. It examines our impact on these landscapes and on the tipping point of their continued viability, encouraging visitors’ awareness of how our behaviour can unwittingly put their continued survival at risk.
